that's second one in a month... wtf?
too bad. WTF is with these portals dying?#!#!!?
I'm going to miss the monthly pdf calender most...
It's true...two of the most known design portals closed in less then a month. Hope this doesn't affect all the others...
blogs killed the portalstars.
There is nothing to do with blogs and websites...it´s all about the time it takes to develop projects like this, Lounge72 spent the last 6 years developing contents and "events" for us all...and what was the return ? that is the question, maybe the return was joy and happiness but after 6 years spending time on it the feelings fade...
This is bad, I was sad when I got the email. Why they at least let uas to enter the archive? :(
I think Karpa is spot on, we all use these portals, but there's not that much in it for the admin and editor folks apart from the kudos. Like Karpa says, it fades after 6 or 7 years. R.I.P Lounge72 and Pixelsurgeon.
I guess these portals should have more space for communication between designers, something like facebook, and sharing ideas more...
nah man this sucks hard.. one of my favorites portals dies..
well, good luck there guys, rip lounge72.
Thanks for your comments guys. Much appreciated :]
I wished it would have been possible for us to keep LOUNGE72 up and running - but it just takes so much time... Too much time if you're working fulltime.
i wonder who's next...
"but it just takes so much time... Too much time if you're working fulltime." Like I said, im no wizard :) the words of KaiH totally said it :) everyone LOVES to travel over information visiting new sites, folios and all the updates, but 90% of the people doesnt imagine the time spent and all the HARD labour needed for all this to be possible...
wow, very sad ... whos next ? k10k?, designiskinky?
I think the question is, what can be done to make sure that this doesn't happen with computerlove? Do we need a portalthat is more 'self sustained' and takes less maintenance? Or maybe some kind of payment system, to make sure that the people in charge actually receive something for all their work?
Either way, thanks to the staff at cpluv for being so strong in their commitment, please don't leave us yet.
Yeah it's a shame to see these web icons disappear for us.
Good luck with everything Kai, and thanks for letting me be a part of it way back in the day :)
"I think the question is, what can be done to make sure that this doesn't happen with computerlove? "
They need to make money off it to keep it alive and that means advertising etc and that makes everyone say "man they sold out". RIP...
Wow, I'm speechless... and very sad. I can say first hand how hard it is to maintain a portal, having just started one myself (with a partner). We are just beginning and have no plans of leaving the community anytime soon, but we can already see how much dedication it takes to keep it going on a daily basis- while working full-time and not getting paid.
Growdesign- It would be nice to have the resources that facebook or myspace has, but that is out of the question for most of us trying to start something grassroots. And yes, big props to cpluv!
bmace- Exactly! Portal owners need to make money to survive but design audiences are so savvy that they can sniff out any ploy to make money and it becomes an instant turn-off. When will designers realize these portals exist for THEM and they should support them- especially if they want to follow in the footsteps one day.
funny that it was not sold? I'm sure there are ppl who would love to continue it...
This is the point, most portals doesnt make it because of a lack of traffic, and so on money... People behind design portals are often designers only. The web is evolving very fast, its difficult to follow the trend when its done only at spare time, and without 'business' ideas. Anyway, there is also some sucessfull stories around us !
By the way, i encourage people at Lounge 72 to mail us if they want to join Computerlove as contributor.
Sad news... once again :(
I'm starting to see why the qbn/newstoday-folks are doing the whole Krops/Vantage thing, smart moves imho.
... and we're still alive and kicking at theroot42 :) 6 years and counting.
thank you to Kai for all the effort! we wish you all the luck
Man as a fellow blogger for DIK for 5 years plus, it is tough as hell maintaining a site like that and keeping content fresh. I am trying to do it now on a smaller scale at Changethethought and work fulltime as an Art Director. You don't get paid for the portal blogging and after a while you just start to lose the motivation for doing it. At first I was pissed about News Today for using so much ad money and posting sponsored links but after a while it makes sense. People need incentive, especially when they are donating so much of their time.
Sad to see L72 close but can understand why. The problem with Newstoday QBN is that they have gone to the other extreme and now they publish almost no content that isn't commercially viable for them. They had a load of good editors but none of them post anything.
To bad Lounge72 stopped, I really liked it. But maybe there's space for a new one ;)
I want to set up a dutch one about a while, when I've time. Takes a lot of time to set it all up.
Please CPLuv, don't die :)
