Mac vs Pc - who gives a shit ?

Well at home i use Pc and at work I use Mac, i love them both, because they carry the tools i use to create my artwork, actually my home pc is a Intel Dual Core 3.8Ghz, 4Gb of Ram, ATI 1900XTX 512mb, 500Gb of HD and a few more candy like double screen (LCD TFT 20"x2), simply the Mac G5 cant handle my Pc hardware configuration and i have spent half the money i would spent to get the latest G5 on the Market that wouldnt perform any better then my home pc.

I dont care about brands because they are cool or not, i dont care Matt Pyke from Universal Everything runs Mac at home and uses it to work, i use my computer to create and the feature im looking for is Performance and i dont reccon that Mac is better, if you buy a PC with the exactly hardware configuration of the latest MAC availble you will spend half the budget you would spent on buying a pc, this means the other rest of the money you pay for a Mac is to pay the Mac OSX...quite expensive.

For example the latest G5 costs about 3.000 euros, i have spent 1.500 on my actual PC, this means the MacOSX costs 1.500 euros but wait i think your not getting it all, have you ever opened a MAC G5 ? ok...your not getting at all, the latests Mac G5 use the exact same hardware that the PC use, the same RAM, the same Brands for Graphic Cards, the next Mac generation will work on Intel Cpu that the PC uses, this means they are EXACTLY the same but with different softwares and Operanting Systems but Mac is more expensive thats it.

Most of the Mac addicts say the Mac is not only the Hardware is the Operating System, for god sake is there any Operating System that worths 1.500 euros ? not really...the only thing i really love about Mac and that i have to agree is that it´s a beatifull piece, it´s cool and if you have one at your home it will look better and it´s more fashionable, but thats about it...because on the Mac i cant even play my favourite Online Game!

I hope to buy a Mac in the future but is just because it´s cool and it will look lovely on my desk side by side with my PC and my Sony Vaio Laptop.

From a developer's point of view, a Mac or a Linux PC is superior to Windows PC. The two systems (Mac and Linux) are very stable, very fast, and very secure. They did a study. In a 6-month study period, a Windows box was compromised one hour and 18 seconds after it was booted for the first time ever. While a Linux PC was never compromised for the entire 6 month study period. The software on Linux and Mac is much better than those on Windows in the sense that Linux and Mac comes with great software as a part of the OS. On Linux, theres OpenOffice, a complete equivalent to Microsoft Office, but its free! Mac comes with all these great pre-install software. And admit, the GUI is great!

yes, mac is expensive. they have monopoly on it, and you also pay for the brand.

I still have my G4 867mhz, and it works fine for what I do.

=oP

Truenemesis, the Mac OSX is based on Unix and not on Linux, anyway i have used Linux and Unix and i believe that is without any doubt a much more secure Operating System then Windows, but the point here is that most users that use Mac they dont have a clue about that´. But please dont get me wrong i like Mac but i also like pc :)

I wasnt saying that Mac is built on Linux. I was just talking about a Linux PC and Mac, just two alternatives for Windows. Either, security is a foremost, and Mac and Linux has that. Akrok has a point. The interface is a part of the brand, and by far, Mac is the most stable consumer OS with great security and stability. Anyway, if you get a Windows machine, you have to buy all your standard use software (office, video editing). Mac comes along with blogging tools, media editing tools, and great compatibility with Linux apps to boo.

Truenemesis Posted by: Truenemesis 777 days ago

TrueNemesis Mac OSX comes with lots of software, but you still have the same stuff I bought for my Pc, because it doesnt come with Adobe or Macromedia Software :) still it doesnt worth 1.500euros :)

electroclandestino Posted by: electroclandestino 777 days ago

don't argue guys! :) i like my windows pc 'cause it does all the big stuff and i love my macbook 'cause it does all the tiny stuff for me and it is invisible at night ;), i don't suffer any known security problems 'cause there is a linux box between me and the world and openoffice for windows is downloaded within about 3 minutes, so - as the headline says - who gives a shit?

lowstyle Posted by: lowstyle 776 days ago

I used to be like you. Mac at work and PC at home. Soon I just gave up and went full mac. I have to admit that it makes more sense for a graphic designer. I do miss the games though, but I got over it.

sparklemachine Posted by: sparklemachine 776 days ago

Well most designers prefer using MAC and that is obviously seen in interviews and images of offices/studios. The way MAC was built and designed was to offer a high standard platform for entertainment but regardless, you can do the same on a PC. I could just as easily spend a lot less and upgrade or buy components of an AMD x2 dual core 4400+, 2GB DDR/DDR 2 RAM, 200GB HD, Nvidia Geforce 7900/x1900xt, 19" WXGA - this could cost me $2000 Australian but it's cheap compared to buying a MAC. I am definitely not saying that we shouldn't use a MAC but you can do the same on a PC.

shapemould Posted by: shapemould 776 days ago

... I could just be as happy seeing a studio having Dell's across the room

shapemould Posted by: shapemould 776 days ago

Lowstyle, me and TrueNemesis are just talking about the issue we are not argueing :) relax :) I was amazed by the new HUGE dell screens, just amazing screens...anyway i like mac, dell, pc the one with the best performance will be the one that im looking for :)

electroclandestino Posted by: electroclandestino 776 days ago

Opsy Dopsy!!! Let me just do an Advert for the Pc People, that some people might forgot about Open Office, well dont spend money on Microsoft Office Pack to get Word, Excel and all the other things that will cost you an eye...get OpenOffice it´s stable is open source and it totally rocks and it´s FREE and LEGAL :D www.openoffice.org

electroclandestino Posted by: electroclandestino 776 days ago

well, i am relaxed nearly all the time ;) btw. tell me where you got that heavy pc-setup for just 1.500eu seems quite cheap down there in portugal... i had a quick look at my favorite hardware store here in berlin and ended up with a similar setup at around 2.800 :/

lowstyle Posted by: lowstyle 776 days ago

You could get that setup for that price but like everyone who does, you shop around. There's one thing just missing from your PC Electroclandestino, change the Dual Core to an AMD X2 4400+ or higher :P

shapemould Posted by: shapemould 776 days ago

I've allways used PC's both at home and in my office. One hell of a lot cheaper especially if you self-build. And if you know what you are doing you can have a rock stable system (or a highly overclocked one ).

Mac's look cool but then again today there are lots of nice PC cases appearing. I've got an Antec P180 .

At college I allways had bad experiences with Macs. They crashed one hell of a lot (although I admit they were over abused systems). I like the fact on a PC I have control, I can gain access and tweak whatever I like from the A8N-SLI BIOS through to all of the system files (I admit I aint played with OSX much so dont know if u have the same control...).

Agent8 Posted by: Agent8 776 days ago

Lowstyle, this is a "self built" computer, i have decided wich parts i want, bought them and asked a profissional to put together all the pieces, i have spent about 1.500euros with a few connections on the market ;) ( nothing special!).

Shapemould, my actual pc is working at 3.8Ghz, but it works stable at 4.0Ghz, but 3.8 is quite enought for my work :) with 4Gb of Ram :) and the Ati 1900XTX 512Mb it simply rocks :)

electroclandestino Posted by: electroclandestino 775 days ago

lets face it, not everone wants to select what parts should be in the box. it should just work from start to finish. I acturlly bought a sony vaio (pc) around same time as I got my mac. guess whos not working very well....peecee. Freeze when ever it wants.
It was do, one of the better looking pc on the market at that moment. just wish it would lasted longer. aaaaaah. =oP
and if I now upgrade, change motherboard etc, its going to cost just below what a new one cost. then it end up being more expensive then the mac anyway. bite that. by the way, just like sparklemachine, I miss the games and the force feedback stering wheel..hellaoffun. =oP

akrok Posted by: akrok 774 days ago

Akrok, I have a Sony Vaio Laptop top of the range 17" screen, amazing, side by side with the G4 Powerbook of my Girlfriend i can only laught, the performance of the Vaio cant be compared to the Mac, because i work at the laptop print huge files easly and if she is working on the same file the computer simply cant handle it...Sony Vaio Laptops are amazing :) still the mac is prettier :D

Remenber that in my first post im only talking about desktops not laptops :D

Best regards,
