Biography:

My name is Dave Soderberg, I am from Denver Colorado and currently design full time for Beatport (beatport.com) as well as freelance under my company: Astrel Creative. I work mostly on interactive design in my free time and interface / interactive for my career. Nothing drives me more than design, the process of creating, and the struggle to constantly be inspired. I am a designer who loves to view, encourage and be inspired by other people's work and creativity. I see design as a constant challenge to communicate something / anything to anyone, whether you're communicating a message or trying to create an interface that is not only beautiful to look at but intuitive to even the most recreational user. Read my blog to see what I've been creating, inspired by or thinking about.

Is Cuil Cool?

There's a new search engine that just launched and it's built by former Google employees. Supposedly it searches more than 3X as many sites as Google. I am undecided... the results seem a little iffy and I can't decide if I love or hate the layout. Be Cuil

Search Engine Cuil

Fail. The first result for my name isn't my site (and I own the .com). The first result for my nickname is some derelict profile on an old site. Most of the time the blatantly obvious is hidden behind 3 pages of drivel. Search engines should not make their layout more important than the data they index. They're merely a passage between where we are and where we want to go. By making a search engine less than unobtrusive, cuil has failed.

After a few simple searches and searching my for my own site. It has a long way to go before it is like or better than google ( wheres the image search on cuil). But this is how google started out, I remember people saying this about google. clusty.com another search engine is much better but not getting the publicity that Cuil is getting.

Cuil - if it is from the Irish language, the name is hard to pronounce for non-irish folks if you dont know how to pronounce it from reading it without hearing or knowing how it is pronounced, it is difficult.

Ah well... according to the BBC news site, it's pronounced like "Cool" (for what it's worth)

I agree with these comments. I have searched for my own site with just the name of the domain ( iikki ) and it never appears, results are blogs or sites where they have talked about my work. I recognize my site is not very well designed for Search Engines but Google places it at the very first result.

My support for Google.

I'd like to like it. Hopefully it will get better of the next few months as it seems a bit clunky at the moment, the search results are OK, but not at Google standards yet, but who knows in time? Worth keeping an eye on I think.

what about this one? www.searchme.com

danaga Posted by: danaga 75 days ago

I couldn't find anything I was searching for. I also tried the same thing as others have (searched for my own site / name) and the only thing it came up with was a dead site that I had two years ago. Terrible search engine. I'm staying with Google.

It's nice to see them try and have the search results displayed different than other search engines do but i feel it's harder to look through it.

actually... search for "cuil" on cuil. 3 pages in and i can't seem to find their own search engine or even an article about it. "cuil search" didn't help either.

fail

It sucks, it even confuses images from different sites!!! For example if you search for David Carvalho the first result is a Dj called David Carvalho on my space but it uses MY LOGOTYPE on that result for the DJ that I dont know from anywhere...and in my www.hellokarpa.com it shows a artwork piece...

Karpa Posted by: Karpa 75 days ago

Fail. I couldn't find anything I was searching for either Cuil Fail PNG

Anything that actually showed up was a great many years out of date to boot. Also, I can't stand the layout.

unttld Posted by: unttld 75 days ago

Yeah I agree with a lot of this. I think the search sucks as of now but there is something intriguing about the layout. I am going to have to fire it up in a few months and see if anything has improved. And to Karpa's point... I was really confused at how many random images show up with other results, they've GOT to get that one fixed.

beaucoupzero Posted by: beaucoupzero 75 days ago

No image search? Uh.... how was this overlooked?

Growdesign Posted by: Growdesign 75 days ago

I'm absolutely amazed... at how it doesn't work at all.

Elenchus Posted by: Elenchus 75 days ago

a) it cant even find itself amongst its searches and the results are significantly lower than googles
b) i hate every website that uses the same generic conceptual photos photos in its company information link www.cuil.com/info
c) why did they think a new search engine was good. atleast offer us something we cant find elsewhere?

jamiejap Posted by: jamiejap 75 days ago

not horrible, but not very functional either. what's with the layout/color scheme? screams 'Flickr' to me...

IKE Posted by: IKE 75 days ago

well its a new concept, Google should learn a bit. Oh wait, it is by Google's ex employee. I give it a year.

exxtraz Posted by: exxtraz 75 days ago
