2012 Olympics

New logo. Comments...
Updates:
Cpluv member Akrok found this article on Design Week: "The design world has been rocked by yesterday’s launch of the Wolff Olins-designed London 2012 branding, which provoked a wave of immediate, negative and ubiquitously fierce criticism... A petition to call for the design of a new logo, has received well over 17 000 signatures at the time of writing and growing at a rate of 2000 an hour."
Cpluv member Thelast mixtape says: "Peoples reaction to this logo is off the scale. apparently the video may give people epileptic fits as well! This just gets better and better!!" Read the full story on Yahoo UK

:cough:
this can't be real.
yes it is, you can just about make out 2012 in the shapes
Any idea who designed this?
Yuk!
Are we back in the 80's ?
Nooo please... not again ! ! !
"the new emblem is modern and will be dynamic, evolving in the years between now and 2012." i hope ;-)
this is so ugly that i already saw a petition to change it.
www.gopetition.co.uk/online/12539.html
from the petition site: "A new logo has been unveiled for the London 2012 Olympics. I feel it is an embarrassment and portrays our country in the worst possible way." Embarrassment is an understatement!! How did this get approved?
The logo was created by Wolff Olins www.wolff-olins.com/newsandpress.htm
It's an absolute insult to British Design.

R
ok. probably they spent all their money on the olympic park so they had to commission a 13 year old gfx pro with the ten pounds left over.
Wow... I'm speechless in disbelief. Anyone know who created it?
It feels very Nazi with those SS signs. Change it.
somebody on the bbc website mentioned it looked like lisa giving bart some oral relief
I agree it's surprising and certainly does appear to be kind of 80s kids TV, but at least they've been brave enough to try something different. It's success is another matter...
I dont believe that is real, no way that London (the mecca of graphic desing) would be represented with this horrible logo. The website www.london2012.com seems really fake for some reason.
its real - sad but true ...
www.olympic.org/uk/games/london/index_uk.asp
HAHAHA...I can't believe that the one who design is acturlly thought it was a good logo. unbelievable.
No way...
it looks like the queens disguarded lingerie
http://www.london2012.com/about-newlook-video.html
Yuck!
What are you guys, webdesigners?
This is totally brilliant! very creative and energetic. I love it!
Another great step from the previous one, i like this one much better.
ps. No offense on the 'webdesigner' comment, i think a lot of people here aren't thinking from the visual identity and branding aspect of this brilliance. But of course the Beijing 2008 identity is one of my favs so far.
not feeling it either. especially the 'break-off' of a part of the number 2 in the lower left. There are ways to go about having an 'energetic' feel, it's just not this.
Listen up. This logo is doing somethings that I don't think anyone has pointed out! -- 1) it's
referencing the shape of the continent's , representing all the global land spaces. Just look at the arrangement, it's abstract, but it's there. 2) It has a feel of shattered glass or more relevant Ice breaking apart, hence a statement about global warming and the glaciers coming apart.
regardless of the meaning of it, it is still one of the ugliest logos I've ever seen. Nevermind it being one we will be seeing A LOT of in the coming years. I'm just waiting for Zach Morris to bring the torch in for the opening ceremonies.
Hummmmmm, not quite Chicago chicago2016.org
A little disappointed in London. But then again sounds like Chicago might have to change theirs.
I agree with 'Withetype'. I instantly thought of a graphic on an 80's t-shirt. It's a total miss for me!
sucks sorry, really sorry
it's just so funny
I wouldn't say that everything is so bad at least the intention was good, but the designer is GUILTY....I must admit!
.. hmm. first impression a bit surprising and thinking it looks kinda bad. BUT. Take a look at the video and see it in use and think identity. It really does work. Lots of energy, it represents diversity and thereby lot's of visual identity. And pretty sure it will tighten up in coming years. Another good thing is all this exitement. Love/hate are always good :D
ZOR! OLYMPICS!!!
oo, that's kinda fug
although in all fairness it does look a little better with the blue background intact.. @ www.london2012.com
the font style of the 'london' text is ugly and unnecessary, the rest of it- like the person above commented, COULD work...
I ♥ 2012 LOGO
80's pop?
Memphis sottsass?
Transformers?
????
its a failure...
its a bad concept and its poorly executed.
gay olympics?
Mee too, i can't believe!!1 Incredible It's a very strange identity of london.
'yo mtv raps' or skidz anyone?
how grotesque
40 comments!!! hahaha
there really is no soul to it. this designs going to hell for sure. hehehe...
thought everyone would get a kick out of this:
2012 Logo - goatse.cx remix
And yes, it's 100% work safe.
make note of the first alternative...
the O kinda looks like map of australia...
The identity and the shape of the logo is well done and well though.
But come on, we are talking about Olympic games. I'm really not sure about it. The logo has to be universal, perfectly understandable by all the people. While Beijing 2008, Barcelona 1992 were perfectly well though identities, and easy to understand and remember, this logo gives the idea of London being the country of graffiti. This logo clearly wants to appeal youngs for interesting into Olympic games. But why? This logo would have been perfect for a Nike or Reebok ad but for OG brand, i'm not sure...
At least it will sweetly suit coca-cola cans heh.
ill just say
compare this 2012 to the Munich 1972 campaign. There is no comparison. Wolf Ollins designed it I believe?
Ohhhhh dear
£400,000 for THAT S***!?
oh dear
It reminds me something from the 80's, i just don't know what. My first impression is that logo it's kind of ugly and shocking like pseudo-punkish hair spray spots from 20 years ago... But time will tell.
take alook in topshop/topman, and it might not be that irrelevant to what is going up and down the high street fashion, saying that i guess its only 2007. i think unfortunatly its not the best, but at the same time its different, but it could be so much better, i feel like where hosting the world strongest man on bbc1 rather than an olympic games!
is it joke?
DISASTER! is there anyway this can be changed before it goes too far? somebody do something!!
I think it's amazing!!! (only joking)
I can't wait until they hand the design over to the "general public" and their pitiful e-mailed attempts, like some genius BBC news reader suggested this morning.
When I first saw this I thought - yuk! But when when you see it applied here, it comes together really well: www.london2012.com/about-newlook-video.html
Culturally relevant and artistically very strong and distinctive. Lets not all get on the band wagon, at least before it's even seen in full context.
needs more wiener dog.
No video, explaination or amount of viewing it can make this a pretty logo... Its horrifying. Makes me sick! (no kiddin')
I admit when I saw it this morning I thought it was complete trash.
However I misunderstood the direction they were going, when I saw it in motion it really comes alive.
The logo on its own isn't great (the london text and ring logo inside are a bit clumsy) but the visual language surrounding it is quite excellent.
Hats off to them for being so bold and confident, I think its 100 times better than any of the other recently Olympics logos which are just dull really.
I would love to design the TV stats overlays for this brand, they're going to be excellent if done correctly.
:|
I just took a look at the video and I can see what is trying to be done with the overall look. But if the visual direction is to use vibrant colors and strong geometric angles then this is not the best mark that can be created using such a brief. Imagine how much stronger the brand could be if you started with a mark that was a little more solid.
To anyone here commenting how great it is, can you help me with the following:
- Point out where the land masses are, I honestly can't spot them. If the 2 from 20 is the UK, then what is the 1 from 12?
- Shattered Glass? Glaciers coming apart? You sound like you're just joking, but if you're serious: worldly issues are really not what an olympic logo focusses on you know...
- is it bold, confident? Yes. Does it make therefore good legible design? No. It's a logomark using numbers - therefore I would think its to be read by people.
- I agree the video on the 2012 site is not bad: its dynamic, flows nicely etc... but the shapes used in the video are much more refined than the chuncks used to "build" the logo.
the vid is really poorly executed actually.
so about the video,
the vignete ( dark on the edges) is really badly feathered,
just look at the first frames and the animation loks like its done by an intern...
I was compelled to create a cpluv account just to comment on this atrocity. This logo is so bad I don't even know where to begin. At first I thought it was a joke. It looks like I tried to spell 2012 with the polygonal lasso using my left hand... and I'm not a lefty. I won't even go off on the font except to say that I've seen 10 year olds who can form better letters than that.
No amount of clever motion graphic videos will mask how awful it is. The video on the london2012.com site tries hard to justify it but it comes off like the visual equivalent of a marketer gesturing wildly and trying to pump up something which is obviously bad. This video is more apt... youtube.com/watch?v=KSYFj4iQ2AU
I hope the power of web2.0 can turn the tide on this... thing... because I certainly don't want to look at this eye sore in 2012.
Whit all respect to the designer that made it, it´s horrible!!!!
dudes, it dont matter if the vid is good or not. the fu..logo its just to bad to be true.
a olympic logo has to work on EVERYTHING. you know all the shh, they going to apply it too.
Here is DesignWeek, side of the story.
(hm..short)
Looks like a blowjob to me!
man... peoples reaction to this logo is off the scale. apparently the video may give people epileptic fits as well!!
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20070605/tuk-uk-britain-olympics-logo-fa6b408.html
this just gets better and better!!
was this made in paint?
btw that pool jump could trigger epileptic attacks. silly.
The post on Underconsideration is in favor of this new approach.
Well what can I say??? probably any one of us here could've done a better job, coz thsi is just plain hideous. And also I read yesterday, that they've spent 400 000 pounds on this logo........
only designers would appreciate this kind of design. but the general public/mass wouldn't understand it. i didn't even see the 2012 at first.
Lol. On the offical website http://www.london2012.com/ You can send in your own designs. Even some on of the kiddy crap looks better designed then this. Although 2012 is a long way away, maybe in the future good design is bad design and they've taken that into consideration?
nuff said...
How to create a logo
OK AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT SEES THE PERVERSION IN THIS... DOGGY STYLE!?!?!...
lol. good one buybybu.

So, this is the 78th comment. Wow. Did I read that right? In the entire history of Computerlove [for which we have been somewhat known for having a lack of user comments in the newsfeed], that number just says everything about this logo.
Looks like Saville got it spot on:
“I find it a bit cheesy. Those rings don’t sit happily within that angular form and the typographic expression of London is a little insecure and apologetic. On the other hand, it’s incredibly noticeable, brave and confrontational. Designs which are effective are abrasive on our sensibilities initially, that is how they work. It doesn’t have to be nice because they are familiar, while a great design forges a new aesthetic. It’s real job is to be a catalyst for awareness of the Olympics and it’s doing that already”
Genius, in a way; but was this approach intended?
OMG! This logo is terrible! It should have been 3 brush strokes resembling a running person over the "London 2012" in Meta Book and the Olimpic rings! I don't recongnize London or the Olimpics in it, I'm out of my confort zone and I want to cry!
I can't believe the people that make these kind of negative remarks in this site are probably also people who praise the 'genius' of the Nike swoosh.
And the 400K were not for a logo! It was a 1 year project to develop a whole corporate identity - if any of you has ever done any work like that, you should know that it's damn hard work. If any of you have any idea on what it costs to run a studio in London, 400K doesn't sound that much.
I like this logo, totally different from other ones...bit rock.. not that formal and classic than the other year's.
I should do a petition in order to keep it..
it's brilliant. well done London!
i find it symphatetic in it's utter simplicity and very smart and even ironic in the way it's formed. definately a world-class graphic design work by all standarts. i wonder if many people criticizing the logo do know what graphic design actually is when talking about works of graphic design giants. to me this is a tibor kalman or stephan sagmeister class execution. i definately love it. everything about it. from the clever, energetic, open, playful way the shapes are formed to the sturdy and protesting typography. very clever. very much of a graphic design soul into it. it definately brings the message and does so exactly by not falling totally into the commercial design cathegory. yet the videos show it works even in that aspect. genius. thank you London!
It reminds me the graphics on my kids toys, one from the power rangers characters: you know from central china, with bad plastic, and too bright colors... ;-) Ugly yes, but ugly AND expensive for the poorest quality... But hey, we had Footix in 98 in France...
haha, like Germanys 2006 Worldcup…same shit different toilet
How sick the "*Logost*" is, well I attended the Adobe event yesterday and saddly the crew from the D&AD commented on the issue saying that still don't know how such a big "as they call the agency behind the creation of this Logost/*Wolf Olins*" won a Yellow Pen (Yellow Pen is like Oscars for the Creative industry)with this design... as a Londoners I just feel sick and lost by the all thing!!! no even the Logost reflects what is London is about ( a multi-cultural city)...for me they mess up big time(all crap)...(_._)
well, after visiting this site I'm not that surprised they went with the chosen logo - a lot of the other entries look rather corporate and dull - in particular the use of colour - they all look the same. So I can sort of see why they chose this logo now - I think the concept has potential, it just needs more more work...
French readers : take a look at Etapes.com
Interresting comments.
And much more.
the queens lingerie, that's what it looks like
I don't really like this logo but I believe it certainly marks a turning point in how corporations/institutions see and assimilate radical branding/identity concepts.
The world is finally getting tired of dull branding and this one is a clear example of that change. You can only make so many copies before something gets worn out and becomes useless, I think that's the current state of corporate design. It's about time for a change.
Hats off to the people involved in this for not being afraid of trying to break the taboos and "rules". They could certainly do much, much better but this is a step in the right direction.
As for London's mayor implying the designers shouldn't get paid for this, I think it's disgraceful how some people just completely take graphic design and the creative process for granted, like it's just a matter of spitting on a piece of paper and taking a photo.
Sad thing is the vast majority of the general public thinks this way about design nowadays...
the worst olympic logo ever....
Easy to say this post is going to win the "most replied post" of 2007... unless whoever designed this creates something else this year!
So you should go to Wolff Olins and look at their work in this case.
I'm getting a bit tired of the comment about the legibility of the logo. That's like saying we need to wear a badge at all times with our name on it so people will know who we are - you usually just need to introduce yourself once. Everybody KNOWS that that is the logo for the LONDON 2012 Olympics, so stop using such a dumbed down argument. It's this sort of attempts to justify and rationalize graphic design that eventially will impose huge constrains to what clients will expect from us, leading to each time blander and more ineficcient result.
what i think:
1) the 80's are cool!
2) the logo is ok.. cuold be better, but i like it
Favourite alternative logo
Link
hands down before the Kosmonavt's comment 24 hours before this one. i agree for all 100%
if you are not talking about the legibility then you are not talking about a logo, for me that is like saying that the clown of mc donalds could be a logo but it's not. that is the difference between a logo and an image
I agree on the fact that you have to brake the rules to make the rules. It is a logo, but a bad one. However if you see how much attention it gets, I would say mission accomplished.
i prefer it to the alternative logo
all the other options are shocking, damn
I can see the concept that they where trying to achieve but it just feels unfinished to me.
#100 - yeah!
"The emblem is flexible and will evolve over the next five years."
- a London 2012 spokesman told BBC Sport.
ciao.
