Concept, Corporate Design, Editorial and Advertisement for a maga-
zine about popculture.
To symbolize the omnipresence of popculture I chose the name KON-
TROL. The title is inspired by Adorno's critique on Massculture. The
name connects two different types of postures towards popculture.
On the one hand it doesnât deny the critical concepts like foreign
regulation, manipulation, rule, force, uniformity, brainwash etc... But
on the other hand the name also admits a positive interpretation of
the object: self-determination and autonomy, which to teach is the
magazine's main task.
Therefore KONTROL should increase the consumer's ability to per-
ceive and handle cultural themes. It should train the reader in under-
standing cultural processes. The focus is on demonstrating exempla-
rily how to define popculture in contrast to massculture, and how to
enjoy its everyday-reception.
