First e-ink magazine cover published

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, american men's magazine Esquire comes with a very special cover. A limited number of copies (100,000 of the total 720,000 print run) will feature an experimental cover that was built using electronic ink.
The price, although undisclosed, is prohibitive, and Ford has been brought in as a "sponsor": A moving car ad appears on the inside cover. Esquire even had to design a battery (a "six-figure investment") that was small enough to fit into a magazine and keep things running until the mags are sold. The batteries will last for 90 days.
The way ahead? An innovative method that will (in time) change the way we design? A waste of resources? What are your feelings about it?

Looks like you really need to hold the thing to make a good judgement on it. Would be good to see how rigid the cover is and how it flexes.

Brilliant!
For now a waste, but as soon as solar power can be used for this item, quite promissing.

oh, my, the last time to get yourself into motion graphics since still graphics might not be around for that long :)

no, seriously, well, it kinda is a revolution but i'd have to compare this to the introduction of flash in web design. more impressive kind of introduction but also less functional than flash. and comparing to flash, how many flash sites do we browse around on a daily basis now 10 years later? daily i browse none. but it's still nice to have the flash option for the times you wanna go fancy, of course

some people are gonna have a lot of fun with this 5-10 years from now, probably. it might also lead to a fully-electronical multi-page magazines some day or something alike but i'm not gonna worry about that now :)

The idea is cool and all and I am sure this will lead to great things... but from what is in the video I would like to think that a simple static design would draw more attention from both designers and the public.

It would be nice to see good use of design being celebrated and hyped about rather than technology. Nonetheless, I am sure I will pick up a copy when this is out.

Well, few minutes ago I hold one of this issue, and I can say that it is like see an animated GIF. The idea is great, we can imagine a thousand of possibilities.. for now is a great beginning.
