BBC

img. BBC Homepage

The new 'beta' BBC homepage has gone (publicly) Live. It's an interesting re-design and hopefully the new direction and design will propagate through to all their content. The beta site has been live for quite a while but it seems that many bugs and dead links still exist in the public version, which results in a rather disappointing launch. None the less, good to see the BBC keeping on the ball and moving forward. You can view the original beta link here, more updates and changes may occur from this location first.

have to say the screenshot looks better than the real thing. I like the functions even if it is a bit the same as netvibes.com its a shame the design is not as strong as the old site. have another go bbc.

extremely nicely done. sure the design is a bit 'vanilla', but the functionality, cleaness, minimalism and overall 'helpful' vibe is to be celebrated. well done, bbc.

Too much Apple like...
Agree with 310k: screenshot looks better than the real thing.

You're all right to some extent, but I'd be wary of tarring any site design with the 'Apple look' brush. 'Apple' design, usability and ideals are as much a part of general design theory these days as any other conventions. It does irk me that a lot of design began reflecting the styling developments of Apple, but it was and is more due to the perceived ideas of usability that just happens to have a particular presentation style attached to it.(in this case at least)

Why are you saying the screenshot looks better if it's exactly the same thing, except for the color scheme?

This new design is an award-winner. Great usability while offering a major dose of customization. I'm not too sure about the red color scheme, but the other ones I've seen in the beta are all looking good. Congratulations to the whole BBC's webdesign team.

I think the content focus has been lost...

With this new version you notice the design too much. The last version was great, as the content ruled the design and nothing got in the way of the information delivery.

I like the customizable feature and sure technically it has advanced - it just seems over designed. It'll take some time getting used to!

Very interesting. I've produced a few thoughts on this whole newspaper 2.0 thing: FerroGate

FerroGaePosted by: FerroGae 493 days ago

i think it's brilliant.

Good point normski. I too notice the design more than the content. Less gradients, more imagery!

I like the new homepage, I think its a real improvement. But why change the weather icons? The previous ones are classic, timeless and easy to read. The new ones just seem a bit washed out and over complicated in contrast.
