MTV.com kills flash site

Back in October MTV launched an all flash site. It ran very slow and took a long time to completely load. It looks like they decided to launch a simpler design using a variety of artwork from various illustrators and designers.

Finally people are starting to understand that flash is fluff.

It's not that flash is just fluff- It was used as the wrong tool in this case where it was totally not needed.

That flash site sounded more like an ego trip with lots of animations and some useless stuff. Now it goes more into 2.0 stylo, wich is far more usable. Doesn't mean that flash is worse, but I have to agree with DrSoFresh : it is not the right project to inject a heavy & beautiful flash machinery.

Sad to see Flash get the boot : ( Definitely a site that makes more sense to be standard HTML / PHP / etc... But I am a big Fantasy Interactive fan and they built the Flash site, did they do this recent one too? Regardless, Flash is here to stay creative115 (Don't hate it cause you don't know how to use it!)

yeah, can't say that I love the new site but it's waaay better than watching the preloader spin all day.

yeah - i liked the flash site they had but it wasn't suited
& became really boring after a while especially on my old powerbook 1.33ghz

the new site is 100% nicer though, just for those good colourful backdrops
& that damn tight css drop down menu (which dies over flash in safari like the rest of them, hoho)

flash definitely has it's place though as some have also said
horses for courses

The CSS + build is tight, I can't disagree with that, and the illustrations are great. But the layout seems a bit uninspired to me.

Since when do all these sites have to look like CNET sites, such as TV.com, Gamespot, and MP3.com with the trademarked ball/dot feature slideshow widgets? These guys can learn something from Khoi Vinh's article: Oh Yeeaahh! I think!

Lets not make it personal though, Flash & XHTML have their places, even hybrids are great, but if you're biased towards just one, you won't be able to make a informed decision in providing the best solution; which we can clearly learn from this example with MTV.

I hate the design, the illustration and the website(/content) don't match at all. Yes it works better and prolly run faster but that doesn't mean the layout needs an template-ish look. The old site may not be the way to go, but atleast the design was propperly done!

They're talking about the redesign on the MTV Labs blog

LysergidPosted by: Lysergid 433 days ago

I know the old MTV was a bit abusive but the problem is also the flash player compatibility with the Mac browsers... Maked it unusable. But the design itself was still fresh.

The html version is the best solution in this case.

Use flash, but use it with your intelligence. The moderation has a better taste :)
