Redprints : Photography Exhibition by Alexandra Pace

Redprints – A Photography Exhibition by Alexandra Pace
Alexandra Pace is, like most photographers, a very personal kind of person. She does not do flash, or endless parties, or bling; just lives her life in a very unassuming kind of way while producing an endless stream of stunning photography.
So when she opens what she dreams one day will be her house to the general public and invites them all in to have a peak – at the architecture, at the layout and of course, at her purposely-created collection of new prints – it is a huge moment indeed, for the viewer and for the photographer herself.
The house in question is Number 68, a four-storey original Valletta abode (her grandparents were the last original inhabitants 30 years ago) in what is fast-becoming a very hip section of the capital in St. Lucy Street. Alexandra has touched practically nothing in it, although she has, of course, had to do a hell of a lot of cleaning and restoring. The stunning wrought-iron fireplaces in the third and fourth floors are still there, taunting us all with their beautiful originality, the steps are as tough to climb as any old house’s and equally a work of craftsmanship, and the bathroom on the second floor is still the size of a football pitch and a shocking black and pink.
With the first collection presented on the ground floor the atmosphere starts with fun. On Santa Marija, when most of Malta is dead, most of its inhabitants away, Alexandra took to the only space she knew would be teeming with people: the beach. There she put her fish-eye lens, so used in her Lomo shots of the London, to the space under water.
Children swim up to her like iridescent fish, curious to find a huge plastic contraption surrounded by a couple of female hands in their way. Legs stand akimbo, swirling their body, heavy or otherwise, the other way. Feet play and sand is disturbed unduly as the festa which kills all other festivities comes alive in the water.
Further up on the second floor of the house the atmosphere changes to a darker and more serious tone. Three further collections are then presented on this floor, which include female nudes, male anatomy studies and food still life photography.
In her years of producing some of Malta’s best portraiture she has brought out every facet, every muscle and sinew of normal, but eminently photo-friendly body she has put in front of her lens. The light shines off the curves of each bulge and every shadow in her Nudes is accentuated in its darkness. You find yourself drawn to the pictures, trying to recognise the model, then give up instantly as you get lost in the detail.
These portraits and studies, which have never been shown before and have been specifically created for this launch exhibition, are on show in the various floors of No.68 Redprints, in from the huge red door reminiscent of Elizabeth Arden’s iconic emblem, and up the steps in what promises to be a massage of the senses.
The Redprints exhibition will serve to open our eyes to a different kind of reality, the kind that photographers see but a normal viewer normally misses. It will also open our eyes to the very personal space of the photographer.
The exhibition is open to the general public from 25th October to 11th November.
Opening Hours – 10:00 -12:00 & 14:00 – 20:00 hrs
