ocd or something else

last night, despite the fact that i still have a ton of boxes to unpack, i did this:

color coding books

one problem i ran into was the fact that i use different color crates to store books, meaning i had to take into a ccount the extra factor of color=coding the actual storage device as well as the books. i think it worked out, i like the way it looks, but i'm not sure i'll be able to find everything quite as quickly. images coming soon?

did you know someone has already made a webzine called ampersand? actually i think theirs is "and per sand," so we might be fine. issue one is done, we're just tweaking the website. link soon.

i have a job

so i haven't been updating this or my website for the past week because: i finally got a job. it was totally weird, kevin called me one day and said "the place i work needs another designer, do you want to do it?" and so i went up for an interview and started the next morning. the place is called media genesis (mediag.com) and i mostly make comps for websites; so far i've made sites for a local university's jewish center, a home care place, a law firm, and a natural birth advocacy site. media genesis is in madison heights, which is about an hour drive, but so far that hasn't been too bad. plus i'm on salery. so things are looking pretty good these days.

do you consider yourself a leader?

notes from the poorhouse:

--ampersand will be done in a matter of days. the pdf is one picture away from finished, after that i'll make a flash version and we're done. the website is started but will probably take about a week to finish. the logo is in an early stage but it's fine for now.

--i have to move out in a week, but if i can get a full-time job before that then my parents will pay for the first month of my next place. applications for border's and gamestop have fallen on deaf ears.

--a new freelance opportunity just came up. hope this doesn't turn in to the tshirt fiasco.

--i'm reading bob dylan's book "chronicles." makes me miss ny all over again. i mentioned to stacey today that the town i've lived in most after ypsilanti is london, at three weeks.

--i'm making a website for stacey's photos soon.

i really want to move and get on with things. this is a shitty situation right now.

getting by

finally got a copy of macromedia studio 8 yesterday. one word: TABS. (sidenote: is it worth even installing anything besides flash and dreamweaver?) the plan is to really go for it with the website, immerse myself in flash, make an Ampersand website, maybe a Bitmap Tiffs site (je deteste myspace), and then take the Aquant exam. in a couple weeks i'll probably make the move from one basement to another, but at least the new one has an internet connection. not sure about the allmusic job, i guess that would change everything. did you know they take AmEx at burger king? c'est vrai. been listening to a lot of RENTALS while i work, makes me feel like a virgin again.

grassrots

so i'm thinking about a radical redesign of my website. more colors, big black boxes. pretty vague, but i was up all night thinking about it and i think i should do it, with or without a serious internet connection. ampersand #1 is so close to done, we'll need a website for that too i guess. also, i'm moving out soon, but i still don't know where to. things are about to change a lot. at this point i'm actually really hoping for the allmusic job, income is the most important thing right now. and i still like music, right?

step into my office baby

the Kassil logos were pretty much rejected. freelance isn't nearly as fun as i thought it would be; i keep doing work, but nobody's paying. tomorrow morning i have an interview with allmusic.com -- assistant editor of pop music -- and i have no idea why. what i really want to do is to get some office space downtown on the cheap and then secretly live there. i need my real computer to be back online so i can post work everyday, and email people promptly, and update my website, and do all the things that any average out-of-work graphic designer is doing. i actually do have a couple leads on cheap space, i think i'll spend the rest of the week pursuing that and catching up on payment requests.

logo fun

logo ideas for a different t-shirt company. its been almost a week since i sent these off, and i still haven't heard anything. maybe freelance isn't so hot?

i've been thinking more and more about starting my own company here in ypsi, maybe with other people i know and like. can we make money? can i live much longer on no money?? will i actually go through with my interview at all music guide???

this is a fucked up time.

what

so i added a new picture to my first gallery and made a second of the freelance stuff i sent in today. also on the table: an interview in royal oak at a good design firm (maybe), and an interview at all music guide as an editor. WTF??

what would be even better: cash from the freelance work

wishbone

still looking for a job. interviewed at a place in ann arbor, but i won't hear back for another two weeks... meanwhile i'm racking up debt, juggling credit cards, and eating dinner at my parents' house almost every night. i'm also working on Ampersand, which is starting to look finished (Stacey's doing a photoshoot), and i've been making t-shirt designs freelance-style but no one has paid me yet. i actually applied for the assistant art director position at DC Comics. no word.

in an effort to bolster web skills i might move my computer into my parents' basement (free internet). thank god i have that bfa

employment

currently without internet at home til maybe september, until then my galleries and blog might look a little bland/empty. just saw france take care of portugal, but i'm standing by italy as my finals winner. i got an email today from a potential full-time employer, which is weird because i just resigned myself to doing freelance work for awhile. i have too many debts to say no, but hopefully i'll have enough time/energy to keep working on my own stuff. my site needs a rehaul, the magazine still isn't done (why?). the job is in ann arbor, hopefully i can get a one-bedroom in ypsi. all that stuff i said about new york still stands, but if might be on hold. unless josh comes through...

i'm going to go home now and work on t-shirt designs. maybe i can upload them in the next few days.
