B-Boy Series by Ward Jenkins

Animator/Illustrator Ward Jenkins has unveiled his b-boy series of paintings at the Grassy Knoll Gallery in portland, OR. "b-boy" is a tribute to the early boogie boys of the Bronx, the original poppin’ & lockin’ dancers who kept the parties live back in the day, back when hip-hop was in its golden, embryonic stage. Using various ‘lo-fi’ materials and surfaces, such as found cardboard, wood, and linoleum, Ward harks back to the essence of the early ingenuity and innovation of hip hop. During the 70’s and early 80’s, kids used a wide variety of surfaces to dance on and perform stylized acrobatic moves. Using what was available, they proved again and again that the brightest sources of creativity often come from the most humble of places. “b-boy”is a tribute to the beginnings of that movement, before the uninformed media brought it to near-fad status.

The opening featured performances by Randm-1, Impulse, and Skywalker of Moon Patrol Crew and guest DJ Computer Fam.

America the Gift Shop

Choc and Awe and many other souvenirs of the last eight years - now available at America the Gift Shop. My personal favorite - Cheney Shredding Secret Documents Snowglobe. America the Gift Shop is the latest photo series from Phillip Toledano, site design by fashionbuddha.

Dylan Coulter Photography

Dylan Coulter is an art director turned photographer with a heavy interest in sports heroes and portraiture. For your post-olympics fix also check out the scrapbook section for a look behind the scenes.

As a side, the site takes full advantage of fullscreen mode so if you have a pair of cinema displays go for it! Site designed and programmed by buddhas

Days with My Father

Phillip Toledano has released a new series of photographs and website called Days with My Father. The stunning imagery is sometimes heart-wrenching, sometimes moving to the point of tears. A very unique and rewarding web experience for those willing to spend some time with it. View Days with my Father.

Amy Ruppel - Migratory Patterns

The Grassy Knoll Gallery features delightful drawings of one of Portland's legends Amy Ruppel. Her work is deceptively simple drawn in layers of wax, wood grains, cut paper, found art, and woodblock prints on fabric. Her artwork is featured on the Lux line of Burton Snowboards and she was Target's artist for their 2007 holiday season. If you are in Portland, you have probably seen her dashing around town on a Vespa delivering paintings from her monthly Online Sales or at her husband's fantastic restaurant Cava.

Horacio Salinas Photography

Fashionbuddha Studio recently launched the site of NY photographer Horacio Salinas. The site stands out for the stunning and creative photography recently on display in the NY Photo Festival but also for the experimental design.

The site takes flash programming to a new level by tweaking the order of bytes that build each image file. The bit-tweaking and re-compressing of the image happens within flash creating a dynamic effect similar to a tv tuner that needs to be adjusted badly. The glitch effect can be increased or decreased using sliders in the menu. The same technique can be used for sound however in this case the sound effects are not manipulated but sampled from a malfunctioning hard drive.

Locks of Lore

Folk artist Evan B Harris and art nouveau-inspired Sarah Jane collaborate to create some gorgeous imagery. The two styles meld together in a series of paintings on multiple wood panels, currently on display at the Grassy Knoll Gallery in Portland, OR. The exhibit is online in the shop section of the site.

Frolic

Fashionbuddha Studio recently collaborated with clay sculptor and MyGuys toy designer Meredith Dittmar to bring her creations to life to tell a story about community for Umpqua Bank. Each character began as a clay figure then modeled and animated in Maya and composited against photographic and painted backgrounds.

Linn Olofsdotter - Nonsensical

Swedish-born artist Linn Olofsdotter (nakd, modernista) has a beautiful new solo exhibit at The Grassy Knoll Gallery titled Nonsensical. The show features a new series of prints on paper and the ones on canvas, created with an iris printer, need to be seen to truly appreciate the super-saturated colors and details hidden in the densely-layered, almost surreal backgrounds.

The Grassy Knoll opened its doors in august to a nearly sold-out show featuring a new series The Imaginarians by Alberto Cerriteno. The gallery aims to fill the gap in an often over-looked art form and is focusing on the work of innovative illustrators and animators. As a curator of the gallery, feel free to email submissions for upcoming shows.
