Modular Typeface design by Chris Clarke

Currently In production, this box contains 64 cubes
Typecube is a design tool used to facilitate the modular construction of letterforms. Typecube’s six faces each bear a unique formal component which provide the basis of two dimensional and three dimensional typographic systems, encouraging flexibility within uniform structure. By varying the number of type cubes, typographic solutions vary in complexity, and are capable of infinite rearrangement.

First e-ink magazine cover published

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, american men's magazine Esquire comes with a very special cover. A limited number of copies (100,000 of the total 720,000 print run) will feature an experimental cover that was built using electronic ink.
The price, although undisclosed, is prohibitive, and Ford has been brought in as a "sponsor": A moving car ad appears on the inside cover. Esquire even had to design a battery (a "six-figure investment") that was small enough to fit into a magazine and keep things running until the mags are sold. The batteries will last for 90 days.
The way ahead? An innovative method that will (in time) change the way we design? A waste of resources? What are your feelings about it?

I met the Walrus

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon's every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit, and timeless message.
This short film came out last year and was even a candidate for an Oscar (which, evidently, it didn't win). The reason why I'm posting it now is that it finally became available through youtube (around a month ago, actually). SO by all means DO enjoy. It is great in many different ways. And if you would like to read more about it visit the official site

Remember Tibet

On the occasion of the Bejing Olympics, RememberTibet.org is asking people to remember Tibet's struggle for independence against the undemocratic government of China.
Visit the site and have a look on how YOUR design submissions can help.
RememberTibet.org is an initiative started by Jonathan Barnbrook and Pedro Inoue designed to engage people during (and after) the Beijing Olympics Games through art and design to help raise awareness of China's policies towards Tibet.

...and finally a reality show on designers

BBC Two and Philippe Starck are teaming up for a brand new TV series to find the next great British designer.
Internationally renowned designer Starck will be heading up a specially created School of Design in Paris. Ten aspiring designers with the talent, drive and vision to create the next ‘must have’ products of the 21st Century will be given the unique opportunity to learn and work alongside Starck and his team over a period of several months.
Those interested can find out more about it right HERE
BBC, Philippe Starck, product design. Could be interesting. Knowing a bit about Starck, he can sometimes be... controversial to say the least. This project could bring more attention to design. BUT is there a chance of making a circus out of it? Does the end justify the means?
I'm interested to hear what YOU think about this one!

Why speakers are called what they are.

Sherwood Forlee is a designer with no design or art education. Instead, he studied fluid dynamics and partial differential equations, and then barely managed to graduate. But graduate he did, and with a high-falutin' sounding title to boot: "Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer". Despite this, Sherwood calls himself a designer because it sounds hip and no one likes hanging around a nerd at a party.
By following THIS link you'll find his excellent speakers. I take it they are not on production yet, but when they'll be, I'd love to get my hands on a couple of them.

Ten Images for Ithaca 2008: competition results

Feel like attending a banner exhibition and then heading for a quiet-crystal clear water beach? If THIS is the case, then I have a suggestion: Ulysses' kingdom, the isle of Ithaca.

The exhibition Ten Images for Ithaca themed this year simply "DREAM" will include the 10 winning posters and the 123 finalists from the total of 1900 submissions received. The winning and finalist posters were selected by this year’s jury committee composed of well-known graphic designers, creative directors and artists.
The exhibition will be presenting the work of graphic designers, illustrators, architects, photographers and artists from 70 countries worldwide such as Greece, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Spain, France, the United States, Iran, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. The result is multidimensional and exceptionally interesting, a true representation of contemporary design trends.
The award ceremony and the opening of the exhibitions with the 10 winning posters and the 123 finalists will take place on the island of Ithaca, Greece on the 12th of July 2008.
