Prolific. Articulating the work ethic of Allison Wilton in one word is easy. She resides in the suburbs of Buffalo, New York in the small city of North Tonawanda. Some might say that creativity runs in the genes of the her family. Having a mother who is a graphic designer and a father who works for a large commercial printer, it only makes sense that she is a designer, printmaker and book artist. Graduating Cum Laude in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in design and printmaking from Alfred University’s School of Art & Design, she embarks upon the world as a creative sponge. Ready to absorb and capture any drip of inspiration that comes her way.
Her BFA thesis project is what began her fascination with the book form and the innovative way of producing books as a hybrid of both design and fine art. her work served as a broad social survey of found information from the Internet that most wouldn’t take time to stop and think about. Her discoveries manifested themselves as a series of 16 one-of-a-kind artist books reflecting on overlooked aspects of the World Wide Web that bombard society daily. After her thesis exhibition, the public began to take notice of her place in the art world. Allison was asked to be a part of a group show with 25 fellow BFA graduates at Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts Gallery in Chelsea, NYC.
In addition to exploring and experimenting within the realm book arts, Allison continues to do design work for a number of clients on the West Coast. Whether it be the creation of a logo, cohesive identity system, packaging design, or web layouts, she continues to network and gain more clients and contacts. She strives to make her mark on the world of design by being passionate about the ideas that surround the creation of great work, not just the supporting aesthetic elements.
Perhaps one of the most exciting things about Allison’s passion for creation is the possibility she sees behind melding the boundaries that exist between fine art and design. Design serves a definite purpose–the communication of ideas and information for an intended audience. However, enormous possibilities exist when breaking free from stagnant and stale ideas by pushing the limits of the interpretation of this communication through the use of basic elements and principles of fine art, such as composition, unity, color, movement and line.
She is currently looking for design work in Toronto, Chicago and other major cities, while still doing freelance work for her existing clients. Allison continues to do publication work for her alma mater, Alfred University, by creating promotional material for The School of Art & Design and the Cohen Center for the Arts. She continues to explore her love for the book form by making colorful coptic bound blank journals to be sold at a boutique in downtown Buffalo and online. In her eyes, each day is another opportunity to make a unique mark on the ever expanding world of art and design.
